Departing in the morning is essential as you have elephants to meet today and they are on a schedule! One of the highlights of your trip is sure to be today’s visit to Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage, which has to be seen to be believed.

You will not only have a chance to feed a baby elephant but see some of the 100 resident elephants of the orphanage wander down the village street to their bathing area! There is time to enjoy a snack here while watching the elephants enjoy their favourite time of the day – bath time! The orphanage boasts the largest herd of captive elephants in the world in an environment that is as close as possible to their natural habitat. It is an admirable program.

Continuing further into the North central part of the country, now you arrive at your next destination at the beautiful Hotel in Sigiriya. There is time for a quick swim in the amazing infinity pool.

Afternoon Safari Game drive at Minneriya National Park. The area was designated as a national park on 12 August 1997, having been originally declared as a wildlife sanctuary in 1938. The reason for declaring the area as protected is to protect the catchment of Minneriya tank and the wildlife of the surrounding area. The tank is of historical importance, having been built by King Mahasen in third century AD. The park is a dry season feeding ground for the elephant population dwelling in forests of Matale, Polonnaruwa, and Trincomalee districts.

Your time in Sigiriya has come to an end so after breakfast head south, still staying in the central province. Today you head to the area of Matale which is renowned for its spice gardens. Take a tour through one of the gardens growing cinnamon, cardamom, curry leaves and ginger, just to mention a few. You will be shown how to make some classic dishes but even if you don’t have all the ingredients at home we will be given suggestions on how to adapt the dish to taste authentic. There is also a chance to visit the shop.

Make your way to the bustling city of Kandy. You will make the trek up the hill to your superb accommodation.

Continuing your tour you make a stop at the Temple of the Tooth which houses Sri Lanka’s most important Buddhist relic – a tooth of the Buddha. The golden roofed temple is visited by both locals and tourists bearing flowers and incense daily. It is a genuine place of worship. For anyone interested a gem shop may be visited as Sri Lanka has one of the worlds’ finest collections of precious and semi-precious gems for sale. King Solomon was said to have procured a great ruby for the Queen of Sheba from Ceylon.

Departing Colombo this morning you’ll head south through the beach area of Bentota and a number of other small villages. Taking a look around at the local attractions is a lovely introduction to the versatility of this pearl of the ocean. Be prepared to see something different every day. The distances are short in Sri Lanka but it does take quite a while to travel a short way. The travel is part of the journey in Sri Lanka! Keep an eye out for the unique way of fishing (pictured below), which is amazing considering fish are such a large part of the diet here.

We also visit a Turtle Hatchery where eggs are kept safe from predators and released after hatching for a better chance of survival. Sri Lanka has five breeds of turtles calling it home.
